Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
