Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
